Barbara Smith

BARBARA ELAINE SMITH

Barbara E. Smith, age 83, died October 19, 2023, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah, Georgia, surrounded by her husband and two sons.

Barbara was born January 22, 1940, to Marc and June Guy, in Hartford, Connecticut, and grew up in Watervliet, New York, graduating from Watervliet High School in 1958.  She graduated from the Berkley Business College in White Plains, New York, and began a 10-year career with Mobil Oil Corporation in White Plains, New York, and at their corporate headquarters in New York City where she met her husband, Robert F. Smith.  They went skiing in Vermont for a few weeks, got engaged, and were married three months later in her parents’ church in Port Chester, New York.

Barbara and Bob have been married 59 years, raised two sons, Daryl and Duane in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, retiring in 2000 to Savannah, Georgia.  Daryl lives in Stamford, Connecticut, with Barbara’s two grandsons, Brian and Charles.  Duane lives in White Plains, New York, with Barbara’s daughter-in-law, Kimberly, and her two granddaughters, Taylor and Keira.

Barbara was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Greenwich while raising her family in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, and of the Skidaway Community Church in Savannah, Georgia, for the last 23 years.  When the two boys were out of elementary school, she went back to work part-time in downtown Greenwich, Connecticut: first for a gynecologist, then for the Greenwich Board of Education, and finally for a major law firm.  Her final part-time job was with the Stamford YMCA.  When not greeting all members and guests at the front desk, she would either run or swim.  Her running led to races in New York City’s Central Park.  After retiring to Savannah in 2000, Barbara and Bob traveled often to Europe, where she enjoyed river and barge cruises in Germany and France and several land trips in Italy.

A funeral service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Greenwich in Old Greenwich, Connecticut on December 17 at 2:00 PM, followed by a reception at Zody’s 19th Hole, 451 Stillwater Road, Stamford, Connecticut.  Barbara’s ashes will be interred in the Church’s Memory Garden.

A memorial service will be held at the Skidaway Community Church in Savannah, Georgia on January 13, 2024, at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception at the Church.

The family suggests any remembrances be made in her memory to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Road, Yorktown Heights, New York 10598, where Barbara has sponsored several guide dogs.

A candle has been lit!

Mrs. Barbara was the epitome of a personality that would light up a room - she never knew a stranger, and always had a story to tell. She was truly blessed with “the gift of gab” and I will miss our conversations dearly. A genuine, loving, and truly kind hearted woman she was, and will continue to be in the memories of those lucky enough to have met her. Deepest condolences to all the family and friends who lost someone very special.

My memories of Barbara go back many years from when we lived in Havemeyer Park. My late son, John Perna, use to deliver the papers to the Smith household and then one of the boys took it over. We had many good times together and I send my deepest sympathy to all of you. Dorothy Perna-Robertson
